FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Here are a few common questions we get asked often.
- Can I avail of FCPI services without being a member?
- Only members may avail of FCPI services.
- I have a cat whose pedigrees were issued by another registry, can I transfer their registration under FCPI?
- If your cat has an authentic, certified pedigree from another cat organization not otherwise banned by WCF, they are eligible to be registered with FCPI.
- My cat has WCF papers issued by a WCF club in a country where I imported it from, why do I need to register again under FCPI?
- The WCF has a decentralized system in issuing pedigrees. In order for us to register your future kittens, its parents must be registered with FCPI as well.
- My cat is mixed breed, can I register it with FCPI?
- Cats that are of mixed parentage may be recorded as household pets (HHP), unless both breeds are recognized as allowed outcrosses under WCF or WCC rules. If such is the case, they may enter the full pedigree register, foundation cat or provisional list, depending on the requirements they meet. Domestic cats (puspins) may also be recorded as HHP.
- My cat resembles a certain breed, but does not have documentation to prove that it is purebred, how do I apply for registration with FCPI?
- Cats who exhibit the phenotype of a recognized breed may be recorded under provisional listing and may eventually be recorded as a foundation cat. The procedure are as follows:
- Step 1: Provisional listing – Owners shall apply for provisional listing of the cat.
- Step 2: Judge evaluation – Owners shall submit the cat for evaluation under novice class in a show hosted by FCPI. Cats which receive judge approval will proceed to Step 3. Cats which do not receive judge approval will be recorded as a household pet.
- Step 3: Foundational recording – FCPI will record the cat under its Foundational Record. A foundation cat may only be bred with the same breed in order for its descendants to proceed to step 4.
- Step 4: Pedigreed or full registration – Third generation purebred descendants of a foundation cat may be applied to enter the full register.
- Can I register a litter if both or either the dam and sire are not registered with FCPI?
- Unfortunately, no. We only accept litter registrations if either one of the parents are FCPI registered. If either the sire or dam are FCPI registered but belong to different owners, the breeder registering the litter must apply for lease recording. If either the dam and sire are registered with FCPI and the other cat is registered in another registry, the breeder registering the litter must apply for supplemental admission of the non-FCPI cat.
- How will I know if the cat I recently purchased is FCPI registered?
- The breeder should be able to provide you with a litter ticket or transfer of ownership certificate. If the breeder has agreed to process the transfer, she should be able to provide you with an FCPI certificate of ownership with your name indicated as the owner of the cat. You may also contact FCPI to verify.
- The breeder refuses to issue my cat’s papers, can FCPI intervene?
- We encourage breeders and owners to settle their disagreements amicably. We also advise that any purchase should be covered by a contract so that both parties are protected. The FCPI has a Dispute Committee where parties may report acts of members deemed inimical or prejudicial to FCPI and its good standing, as well as to the welfare of cats in general.
- My cat’s pedigree is fake, what can I do?
- Get in touch with the breeder directly. He or she may be able to help you get the proper documentation for your cat. Another option is to avail of FCPI’s provisional listing service, and to show the cats under Novice Class so the cat can be entered in the Foundational Record.
- Can FCPI refuse to register a cat through its pedigree? In this case, why would FCPI retain a portion of the fee?
- Yes, FCPI may refuse to register a cat if the foreign pedigrees or ownership certificates are not authentic or have been issued to more than one cat. To uphold the standards of the WCF, we will not register cats whose documentation are spurious or fraudulent. We retain part of the fee for failed registrations because our staff undertakes fact finding and diligent research before a registration is issued. This involves coordinating with other WCF member clubs to verify credentials.

* Please note that for some cat associations, certain breeds require at least five generations of pure breeding before entry into the full register is permitted.
